About the Rhino PCB

Rhino is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by Nu-hin, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 160 × 58 mm, with 74 components from 38 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA8-P, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the 74HC595 and L293NE. By type, the board carries 19 diodes, 16 resistors, 11 capacitors, 7 connectors, 3 ICs and 2 inductors.

It belongs with the robotics & motion and sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

Rhino robot schematics, PCBs and firmware

Rhino is a robot based on AVR ATmega microcontroller.

it runs on AVR ATmega8 microcontroller; it moves around on cool tank tracks; it has 3 different sensors: ultrasonic distance sensor, lightning sensor, 3-axis accelerometer (as a removable module); it has a Bluetooth serial module (removable); it has 4 bright white LEDs to light its way; it has three general-purpose LED indicators (red, green, blue); it can produce an irritating sound; it has a potentiometer (to adjust continuous parameters) and a general-purpose button (to adjust discrete ones); * it runs on 4 AA accumulators.

Rhino: common questions

What microcontroller does the Rhino use?

The Rhino is built around the ATMEGA8-P, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Rhino PCB?

The Rhino measures 160 × 58 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Rhino?

74 components, from 38 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Rhino design files?

From the Nu-hin/rhino repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Rhino design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Nu-hin. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Rhino without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
