About the Radio PCB

Radio is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by ojousima, published on GitHub under the Custom license license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 35 × 41 mm, with 74 components from 26 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA328-A, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the LTC3331, BLE113, SN74AUP1T32 and ADXL375. By type, the board carries 28 resistors, 18 capacitors, 5 ICs, 4 connectors, 3 inductors and 2 transistors.

It belongs with the rf & radio designs in this gallery.

From the project

My Master's thesis, submitted for review. Submitted version is in commit af3c147e

PCB designs are licensed under CERN OHL 1.2, please see LICENSE.md for details.

My personal favourite piece of work during the thesis was making animations of magnetic fields using a magnetics FEA software FEMM. Lua scripts were used to step parameters of the simulation and exporting images of fields strenghts. Finally convert was used to create animations from the images. for example convert -delay 12 -loop 0 magnet.bmp animated.gif` .

Radio: common questions

What microcontroller does the Radio use?

The Radio is built around the ATMEGA328-A, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Radio PCB?

The Radio measures 35 × 41 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Radio?

74 components, from 26 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Radio design files?

From the ojousima/thesis repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Radio design in my own project?

It is published under Custom license, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the Radio without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
