About the 1.5U-backplane PCB

1.5U-backplane is an open source PCB design by oresat, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 82.5 × 156.7 mm, with 41 components from 13 distinct parts.

By type, the board carries 18 connectors, 13 capacitors and 10 resistors.

It belongs with the power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Artisanally hand-crafted bespoke backplane for OreSat.

The OreSat CubeSat bus uses a card cage / backplane system based on a 1 Mbps Controller Area Network (CAN) bus and a 2 cell Lithium ion battery power bus (6.0 - 8.4 V). There are ~ 8 cards per CubeSat "U", and the board is meant to be general purpose enough to allow for some card swapping. The RF lines, however, are microstrips on the backplane PCB so the backplane must be rev'd for changes in the RF cards. There are three sets of connectors:

1.5U-backplane: common questions

How big is the 1.5U-backplane PCB?

The 1.5U-backplane measures 82.5 × 156.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the 1.5U-backplane?

41 components, from 13 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the 1.5U-backplane design files?

From the oresat/oresat-backplane repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the 1.5U-backplane design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with oresat. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.
