About the Bad Thing of the Edge Keyboard PCB

Bad Thing of the Edge Keyboard is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by Pakequis, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 118.6 × 145.9 mm, with 53 components from 7 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. By type, the board carries 20 switches, 16 diodes, 12 resistors, 4 transistors and 1 IC.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

Mechanical keyboard for left hand with Raspberry Pi Pico for games.

Sometimes I play Diablo 3 on my small 7-inch laptop and have difficulty with the keyboard. The keys are very small and the placement is a little different from a regular keyboard. Yes, I could remap the keys or use a regular keyboard, but it wouldn't be as fun as making my own keyboard.

The keyboard layout was made for my left hand with the main four fingers on the skills buttons and the thumb on the potion button.

Bad Thing of the Edge Keyboard: common questions

What microcontroller does the Bad Thing of the Edge Keyboard use?

The Bad Thing of the Edge Keyboard is built around the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Bad Thing of the Edge Keyboard PCB?

The Bad Thing of the Edge Keyboard measures 118.6 × 145.9 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Bad Thing of the Edge Keyboard?

53 components, from 7 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Bad Thing of the Edge Keyboard design files?

From the Pakequis/Bad-Thing-of-the-Edge-keyboard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Bad Thing of the Edge Keyboard design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which Pakequis chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Bad Thing of the Edge Keyboard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
