About the WeirdFlexButOk PCB

WeirdFlexButOk is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by penk, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 238 × 109.9 mm, with 75 components from 4 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040_Zero, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. By type, the board carries 36 switches, 36 diodes, 2 inductors and 1 IC.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

A hot-swappable unibody ergo split keyboard.

This is inspired by Joe Scotto's handwired ScottoErgo but opts for Choc spacing and hot-swap sockets, plus a super-bendy 0.8mm PCB with kerf bending cuts. It flexes to follow the case’s contour, providing a 15° tilt and 10° tent from one FR4 PCB.

WeirdFlexButOk: common questions

What microcontroller does the WeirdFlexButOk use?

The WeirdFlexButOk is built around the RP2040_Zero, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the WeirdFlexButOk PCB?

The WeirdFlexButOk measures 238 × 109.9 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the WeirdFlexButOk?

75 components, from 4 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the WeirdFlexButOk design files?

From the penk/WeirdFlexButOk repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the WeirdFlexButOk design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which penk chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the WeirdFlexButOk without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
