About the WeirdFlexButOk-MX PCB

WeirdFlexButOk-MX is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by penk, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 282.7 × 131 mm, with 89 components from 4 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040_Zero, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. By type, the board carries 42 switches, 42 diodes, 4 inductors and 1 IC.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

A hot-swappable, ergo monoblock split keyboard with tenting.

A hot-swappable, ergo monoblock split keyboard with tenting.

Similar to the Choc version, this keyboard features a 0.8mm PCB with serpentine routing (kerf cuts) near the thumb clusters. These cuts allow the board to flex along the contour of the 3D printed case, forming a 20° tilt and 10° tent from a single PCB.

- Hot-swappable ergo monoblock split in MX spacing - Built-in tenting (10°) and tilting (20°) from a single FR-4 PCB - Breakable pinky columns, for 36 or 42-key layouts - Optional RGB underglow LEDs

WeirdFlexButOk-MX: common questions

What microcontroller does the WeirdFlexButOk-MX use?

The WeirdFlexButOk-MX is built around the RP2040_Zero, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the WeirdFlexButOk-MX PCB?

The WeirdFlexButOk-MX measures 282.7 × 131 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the WeirdFlexButOk-MX?

89 components, from 4 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the WeirdFlexButOk-MX design files?

From the penk/WeirdFlexButOk-MX repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the WeirdFlexButOk-MX design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which penk chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the WeirdFlexButOk-MX without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
