From the project

Open-source 4096-channel FPGA MCA for conditioned detector pulses

This directory publishes the current r8 engineering design for a higher- performance Aster MCA. It is a routed, auditable hardware concept, not a released production design.

The FPGA is intended to capture the complete 16-bit ADC bus and perform triggering, baseline tracking, pulse-height/area extraction, pile-up handling, histogramming and event buffering. The RP2350 module is intended to provide USB, configuration, control and higher-level data transfer. Firmware for this architecture has not yet been implemented.

Aster-MCA: common questions

What microcontroller does the Aster-MCA use?

The Aster-MCA is built around the RP2350 Pico 2 compatible 52x21mm, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Aster-MCA PCB?

The Aster-MCA measures 90 × 70 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Aster-MCA?

102 components, from 61 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Aster-MCA design files?

From the pulsefoundry/Aster-MCA repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Aster-MCA design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license, which pulsefoundry chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Aster-MCA without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
