About the CANPower PCB

CANPower is an open source PIC PCB design by RaphWeyman, published on GitHub under the GPL-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 75 × 35 mm, with 62 components from 32 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the PIC24HJ128GP504, from the PIC family. Other key parts include the MCP1727-3302, MCP16311, MCP2562-E/SN and MC06XSD200. By type, the board carries 23 capacitors, 21 resistors, 7 connectors, 5 ICs, 2 transistors and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

From the project

Accessory power controller for BMW CAN bus bikes

Two channel power switch using BMW CAN bus messages to control switch output. Microchip PIC24 based.

Hardware is a printed circuit board created and modifiable with KiCAD. If no modifications are required then the gerbers zip file can be used as is to get manufactured. The gerber file names are as required by Elecrow.

The software is packaged as a Microchip PIC IDE project and requires Microchip MPLAB X with the 16 bit PIC compiler installed - all free from the Microchip website.

CANPower: common questions

What microcontroller does the CANPower use?

The CANPower is built around the PIC24HJ128GP504, from the PIC family.

How big is the CANPower PCB?

The CANPower measures 75 × 35 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the CANPower?

62 components, from 32 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the CANPower design files?

From the RaphWeyman/CANPower repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the CANPower design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-2.0 license, which RaphWeyman chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the CANPower without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug PIC firmware against it before you order a PCB.
