About the Ax gateway PCB

Ax gateway is an open source Raspberry Pi PCB design by richardeoin, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 2 × 17 mm, with 92 components from 39 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Raspberry_Pi_Conn, from the Raspberry Pi family. Other key parts include the TG-5006CJ, TPS73433 and AX5243. By type, the board carries 46 capacitors, 18 inductors, 10 diodes, 8 resistors, 4 ICs and 4 connectors.

It belongs with the rf & radio designs in this gallery.

From the project

This folder contains the schematic files for the ax-gateway header board.

This folder contains the schematic files for the ax-gateway header board.

This board supports one or two AX5243 radios, with a bi-directional antenna port for each radio. It has been tested with a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B.

The differential match can be populated for various frequencies, using the values found in the AX5243 datasheet. Usually this is 144MHz, 434MHz or 868MHz. Lext can be populated so that frequencies outside of 400-525MHz / 800-1050MHz can be used; usually this is 22nH for 140-154MHz.

Ax gateway: common questions

What microcontroller does the Ax gateway use?

The Ax gateway is built around the Raspberry_Pi_Conn, from the Raspberry Pi family.

How big is the Ax gateway PCB?

The Ax gateway measures 2 × 17 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Ax gateway?

92 components, from 39 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Ax gateway design files?

From the richardeoin/ax repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Ax gateway design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with richardeoin. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Ax gateway without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Raspberry Pi firmware against it before you order a PCB.
