A RP2040 based DECstation emulator

This document outlines the DECstation 2040, a RP2040 based DECstation 3000 emulator that can run DECWindows. A summary of features:

- RP2040, running at 1.8v/300 MHz - 32 MB of PSRAM - 8 MB SPI flash - uSD card socket - Monochrome VGA at 1024 x 864 - Ethernet RMII PHY support (socket on rev 1.5, integrated in rev 2.1)

- 4 port PSRAM PIO engine - PIO driven VGA, with seperate 16x16 cursor plane overlay - USB HID to DECWindows keyboard and mouse

DECstation2040: common questions

What microcontroller does the DECstation2040 use?

The DECstation2040 is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the DECstation2040 PCB?

The DECstation2040 measures 52 × 90 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the DECstation2040?

56 components, from 26 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the DECstation2040 design files?

From the rscott2049/DECstation2040 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the DECstation2040 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its BSD-3-Clause license, which rscott2049 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the DECstation2040 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
