About the NamePlate PCB

NamePlate is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by scottalmond, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 254 × 40.6 mm, with 119 components from 14 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATtiny3216-S, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the SI7211-B-00-IV. By type, the board carries 100 diodes, 9 connectors, 5 capacitors, 2 ICs, 2 resistors and 1 switch.

It belongs with the displays & leds and usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

From the project

Many cubicles are adorned with a standard aluminum name plate holding a piece of paper denoting the occupant's name. This project presents an upgraded name tag that is backlit with LEDs.

This project was started as something simple to get active again after the COVID-19 lockdown. Intent was to produce a visually engaging product with a price point at or below $25 in small production runs (10 units) to be in compliance with corporate gifting guidelines.

NamePlate: common questions

What microcontroller does the NamePlate use?

The NamePlate is built around the ATtiny3216-S, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the NamePlate PCB?

The NamePlate measures 254 × 40.6 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the NamePlate?

119 components, from 14 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the NamePlate design files?

From the scottalmond/NamePlate repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the NamePlate design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with scottalmond. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the NamePlate without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
