Chicken Coop Controller

Build your own automated, off-grid chicken coop door

A minimal, ultra-reliable, battery-powered AVR controller that opens the door at sunrise, closes and locks it at sunset — completely offline, no sensors, no Wi-Fi, no cloud, no GPS.

Designed for a mobile pasture-raised coop that moves with cattle and sheep. Runs for months on a small 12 V battery (solar is only a top-up). Survives Arkansas mud, ice, dust, coyotes, and power failures.

Chickencoop3.3: common questions

What microcontroller does the Chickencoop3.3 use?

The Chickencoop3.3 is built around the ATmega1284P-P, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Chickencoop3.3 PCB?

The Chickencoop3.3 measures 130 × 100 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Chickencoop3.3?

47 components, from 29 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Chickencoop3.3 design files?

From the vinthewrench/chickencoop-3 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Chickencoop3.3 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which vinthewrench chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Chickencoop3.3 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
