About the MerlynESC PCB

MerlynESC is an open source Silicon Labs PCB design by YeetTheAnson, published on GitHub. It is a 6-layer board measuring 30.5 × 31.9 mm, with 146 components from 19 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the EFM8BB21F16G-C-QFN20R, from the Silicon Labs family. Other key parts include the HT75C0-1, HT7533-1, EG6288 and INA139NA/3K. By type, the board carries 67 resistors, 31 capacitors, 24 transistors, 12 diodes and 11 ICs.

It belongs with the robotics & motion, power & battery and sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

Successor to the Merlyn411 25mm flight controller. The flight stack includes a 3in1 20mm flight controller and a 20mm ESC.

The Merlyn435 also upgrades the IMU from the MPU6500 to the LSM6DSK320X, which provides significantly better vibration noise rejection at $3.8\ \mathrm{mdps}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ compared to $10\ \mathrm{mdps}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$. This results in cooler motors and more stable flights with fewer gyro filters, preventing issues such as mid throttle oscillation and flyaways.

MerlynESC: common questions

What microcontroller does the MerlynESC use?

The MerlynESC is built around the EFM8BB21F16G-C-QFN20R, from the Silicon Labs family.

How big is the MerlynESC PCB?

The MerlynESC measures 30.5 × 31.9 mm, has 6 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the MerlynESC?

146 components, from 19 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the MerlynESC design files?

From the YeetTheAnson/Merlyn435-Flight-Stack repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the MerlynESC design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with YeetTheAnson. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the MerlynESC without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Silicon Labs firmware against it before you order a PCB.
