About the Modular PCB

Modular is an open source NXP PCB design by zevv, published on GitHub under the BSD-2-Clause license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 85 × 85 mm, with 203 components from 41 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the LPC4330FBD144, from the NXP family. Other key parts include the LD1117S33TR_SOT223, SSM2604, TL972, AT45DB161-E and SN65HVD231. By type, the board carries 94 resistors, 53 capacitors, 20 connectors, 16 ICs, 9 inductors and 5 diodes.

It belongs with the audio designs in this gallery.

From the project

Electronic design and firmware for analogue/digital hybrid modular synthesizer

This repo contains the electronic design files and firmware for an analog/digital hybrid modular synthesizer system. The synth will be built from a collection of separate modules which can be connected (patched) like a traditional modular synth. The modules contain a fast CPU and an audio codec and perform all work in the digital domain. The same PCB design is used in all modules, and the firmware will make each module behave as a different function like oscillators, filters, wave shapers, delay, reverb, etc.

Modular: common questions

What microcontroller does the Modular use?

The Modular is built around the LPC4330FBD144, from the NXP family.

How big is the Modular PCB?

The Modular measures 85 × 85 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Modular?

203 components, from 41 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Modular design files?

From the zevv/modular repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Modular design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its BSD-2-Clause license, which zevv chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Modular without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug NXP firmware against it before you order a PCB.
