About the SmartGeiger PCB

SmartGeiger is an open source ESP32 PCB design by ahnaf-tahmid-chowdhury, published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 94 × 32 mm, with 21 components from 17 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32DEVKITV1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the HC-SR04. By type, the board carries 5 resistors, 4 diodes, 4 capacitors, 2 ICs, 2 transistors and 2 inductors.

It belongs with the iot & wireless and science & space designs in this gallery.

From the project

Development of background radiation monitoring with IoT based device

- Flash ESP32 with Micropython - Setup 400v voltage output to count radioactivity from SBM-20 with 4.5M MΩ series resistor - Measures radioactive gamma and beta and alpha radiation with quite good resolution - Use of shields to detect particles - Use of ULTRASONIC SENSOR to detect location of the sample - Collcet the data from the serial and then add them to a list of array by using python script - Use of MQTTClient to pass the observed data to network - Use of Node-RED to programe for wiring together hardware devices, APIs and online services in new and interesting ways.

SmartGeiger: common questions

What microcontroller does the SmartGeiger use?

The SmartGeiger is built around the ESP32DEVKITV1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the SmartGeiger PCB?

The SmartGeiger measures 94 × 32 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the SmartGeiger?

21 components, from 17 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the SmartGeiger design files?

From the ahnaf-tahmid-chowdhury/SmartGeiger repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the SmartGeiger design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which ahnaf-tahmid-chowdhury chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the SmartGeiger without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
