About the Dc motor speed controller PCB
Dc motor speed controller is an open source PCB design by ajkumar-1907, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 56.5 × 29 mm, with 15 components from 10 distinct parts.
Other key parts include the NE555P. By type, the board carries 4 diodes, 3 capacitors, 3 resistors, 2 connectors, 1 IC and 1 transistor.
From the project
Open-source library of power electronics converter topologies — KiCad schematics, working principles, use cases, and design notes for DC-DC, AC-DC, DC-AC, and AC-AC converters. Free to use, modify, and build on.
A PWM speed controller for brushed DC motors. An NE555 timer generates a fixed-frequency PWM signal whose duty cycle is set by a potentiometer, and a TIP122 Darlington transistor switches the motor current.
Reducing a DC motor's supply with a series resistor wastes power as heat and kills low-speed torque. Pulse-width modulation (PWM) instead switches the motor fully on and fully off many times a second. The motor's inductance and mechanical inertia average the pulses, so the effective voltage is set by the duty cycle:
