About the SAMD21-breakout
SAMD21-breakout is an open source Microchip SAM PCB design by atoomnetmarc, published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 61.5 × 25 mm, with 30 components from 18 distinct parts.
Its main chip is the ATSAMD21G18A-AU, from the Microchip SAM family. Other key parts include the AMS1117-3.3. By type, the board carries 12 capacitors, 5 diodes, 5 resistors, 3 connectors, 2 ICs and 1 crystal.
It belongs with the dev boards & breakouts designs in this gallery.

SAMD21 breakout board, layout inspired by Arduino MKR Zero.
ATSAMD21G18A-AU breakout board with the physical layout inspired by the Arduino MKR Zero.
Supply power to 3V3 pin. Or supply power to 5V pin (or USB) and get free 3V3.
Solder every component except U1, J2, J4 and J5. Begin with all the components on the bottom.
Apply current limited (50mA) 5V to GND and 5V pin. Current should be about 6mA. Measure voltage on 3V3 pin, it should be 3.3V. Disconnect. Connect USB, both LEDs should light up again.

SAMD21-breakout: common questions
What microcontroller does the SAMD21-breakout use?
The SAMD21-breakout is built around the ATSAMD21G18A-AU, from the Microchip SAM family.
How big is the SAMD21-breakout?
The SAMD21-breakout measures 61.5 × 25 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.
How many components are on the SAMD21-breakout?
30 components, from 18 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the SAMD21-breakout design files?
From the atoomnetmarc/SAMD21-breakout repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the SAMD21-breakout design in my own project?
Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which atoomnetmarc chose for the repository.
Can I test firmware for the SAMD21-breakout without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
