About the Alpha.ctrl PCB

Alpha.ctrl is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by banjomasterpete, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 265 × 200 mm, with 113 components from 19 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino_Nano_Socket, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the 4051, 6N138 and L7805. By type, the board carries 42 resistors, 19 capacitors, 10 transformers, 7 ICs, 2 switches and 2 diodes.

It belongs with the audio designs in this gallery.

From the project

An open source Sysex controller for the Roland Alpha Juno

The Alpha Juno is a classic synthesizer with patches ranging from lush pads to the ‘Hoover’, but it’s also annoying to program. All parameter changes are done using 2 membrane keys and the alpha dial, this is adequate for making small changes but building patches from scratch can turn to agony. If it was the 80’s, the Alpha Juno could have been purchased with the optional programmer, the PG-300. This controller was specifically built for the Alpha 1 and 2 and restored the individual parameter change functions of previous Junos. In the 2020’s however, the PG-300s are often going for twice the…

Alpha.ctrl: common questions

What microcontroller does the Alpha.ctrl use?

The Alpha.ctrl is built around the Arduino_Nano_Socket, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Alpha.ctrl PCB?

The Alpha.ctrl measures 265 × 200 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Alpha.ctrl?

113 components, from 19 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Alpha.ctrl design files?

From the banjomasterpete/alpha.ctrl repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Alpha.ctrl design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which banjomasterpete chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Alpha.ctrl without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
