About the Pictas PCB

Pictas is an open source PIC PCB design by bigbass1997, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 74.9 × 89.2 mm, with 34 components from 27 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the PIC18F27K42, from the PIC family. Other key parts include the MCP2221A, PIC18LF47K42, W25Q128JVSIQ and LM1881. By type, the board carries 15 connectors, 7 capacitors, 5 ICs, 4 resistors, 2 transistors and 1 switch.

It belongs with the displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

Low-cost replay device for playing back Tool Assisted Speedruns on real hardware

A PIC18F47K42 microcontroller is used for the replay portion of the device, and the smaller PIC18F27K42 is used for controlling the input displays.

Unlike a typical TAS replay device, this one stores the TAS inputs on-board, using serial flash memory (W25Q128JVSIQ), capable of storing 16 MB of input data. The advantage is that USB communication is not required during replay. It simplifies the replay process, and greatly reduces the chance of corrupted inputs. Additionally, once programmed, the device can be used without a USB host computer (WIP feature).

Pictas: common questions

What microcontroller does the Pictas use?

The Pictas is built around the PIC18F27K42, from the PIC family.

How big is the Pictas PCB?

The Pictas measures 74.9 × 89.2 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Pictas?

34 components, from 27 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Pictas design files?

From the bigbass1997/PICTAS repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Pictas design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with bigbass1997. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Pictas without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug PIC firmware against it before you order a PCB.
