About the BoatOpenIO-v2 PCB

BoatOpenIO-v2 is an open source ESP32 PCB design by bigbrainlabs, published on GitHub under the Custom license license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 90 × 60 mm, with 46 components from 13 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-WROOM-32D, from the ESP32 family. By type, the board carries 6 diodes, 1 crystal and 1 connector.

It belongs with the sensors, iot & wireless and test & measurement designs in this gallery.

From the project

Universal 16-channel analog marine gateway for boats with legacy VDO sensors. Connects analog instruments to MQTT and Signal K without sensor replacement. ESP32-based, open source, modular mini-board system.

Universal Marine IO System – Open Source, modular, fully configurable

BoatOpenIO is an open hardware platform for sensor integration on boats. Each of the 16 sensor terminals can be freely assigned to any of the up to 16 input channels via software. Pluggable mini-boards handle signal conditioning — no soldering, no rewiring.

Part of the Logbook Without Posing series – Volume 3.

BoatOpenIO-v2: common questions

What microcontroller does the BoatOpenIO-v2 use?

The BoatOpenIO-v2 is built around the ESP32-WROOM-32D, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the BoatOpenIO-v2 PCB?

The BoatOpenIO-v2 measures 90 × 60 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the BoatOpenIO-v2?

46 components, from 13 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the BoatOpenIO-v2 design files?

From the bigbrainlabs/BoatOpenIO repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the BoatOpenIO-v2 design in my own project?

It is published under Custom license, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the BoatOpenIO-v2 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
