About the MotorCombo THT PCB

MotorCombo THT is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by bigbrainlabs, published on GitHub under the Custom license license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 95 × 55 mm, with 35 components from 12 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP-01v090, from the ESP8266 family. By type, the board carries 13 resistors, 6 capacitors, 5 jumpers and 1 diode.

It belongs with the sensors, iot & wireless and test & measurement designs in this gallery.

From the project

Universal 16-channel analog marine gateway for boats with legacy VDO sensors. Connects analog instruments to MQTT and Signal K without sensor replacement. ESP32-based, open source, modular mini-board system.

Through-hole (THT) variant of the MotorCombo board. Combines the six typical engine room signals onto a single board instead of plugging in six separate mini-boards.

Every part is through-hole — hand-solderable, no SMD equipment needed.

Every channel has a 100 nF capacitor for signal smoothing (C1–C6).

Per the netlist, the JST 3-pin connectors are wired as input / GND / output: the raw signal arrives on pin 1, the conditioned signal returns on pin 3.

MotorCombo THT: common questions

What microcontroller does the MotorCombo THT use?

The MotorCombo THT is built around the ESP-01v090, from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the MotorCombo THT PCB?

The MotorCombo THT measures 95 × 55 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the MotorCombo THT?

35 components, from 12 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the MotorCombo THT design files?

From the bigbrainlabs/BoatOpenIO repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the MotorCombo THT design in my own project?

It is published under Custom license, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the MotorCombo THT without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
