About the Biobot hardware PCB

Biobot hardware is an open source ESP32 PCB design by biobotproject-org, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board, with 4 components from 4 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the NANO-ESP32-ENTRY, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the TCA9548APWR. By type, the board carries 2 ICs, 1 connector and 1 capacitor.

From the project

KiCad schematics, PCB layout files, Gerber files for manufacturing, 3D-printable enclosure STL files, Bill of Materials (BOM) with purchase links

The first attempt at a carrier board, drawn in KiCad 9. It contains only a Nano ESP32 module, an M.2 socket for the Notecard, a TCA9548A I2C multiplexer, and one capacitor. The board file is empty; layout was started and abandoned on 12 November 2025 (see the backups folder).

It was superseded by the Altium "Fire Detection Device" board in pcb/fire-detection-device/. Kept for history only.

Biobot hardware: common questions

What microcontroller does the Biobot hardware use?

The Biobot hardware is built around the NANO-ESP32-ENTRY, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Biobot hardware PCB?

The Biobot hardware has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Biobot hardware?

4 components, from 4 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Biobot hardware design files?

From the biobotproject-org/biobot-hardware repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Biobot hardware design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license, which biobotproject-org chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Biobot hardware without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
