About the Spin coater v1 PCB

Spin coater v1 is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by BirdbrainEngineer, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 102 × 76 mm, with 46 components from 30 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the LM7805. By type, the board carries 10 resistors, 8 diodes, 7 test points, 7 capacitors, 6 connectors and 3 transistors.

From the project

Open hardware & software DIY spin coater

So... in a nutshell, a spin coater is essentially just a controllable/programmable spinner onto which one can attach a variety of substrates.

Multiple extremely important parts of the device, such as the hub and sample holder combo that makes up the gravity chuck design of this spin coater, are meant to be 3d-printed. So, it is basically a necessity to have access to a basic 3d printer... or a cnc mill if going overkill.

Spin coater v1: common questions

What microcontroller does the Spin coater v1 use?

The Spin coater v1 is built around the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Spin coater v1 PCB?

The Spin coater v1 measures 102 × 76 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Spin coater v1?

46 components, from 30 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Spin coater v1 design files?

From the BirdbrainEngineer/Spin-coater-v1 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Spin coater v1 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which BirdbrainEngineer chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Spin coater v1 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
