About the Spell tome bottom PCB

Spell tome bottom is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by bitshiftcrazy, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 69.9 × 100 mm, with 25 components from 16 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO-RP2040-DIP, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the MCP1640X-XCHY. By type, the board carries 8 capacitors, 6 resistors, 5 switches, 2 ICs, 2 connectors and 1 diode.

It belongs with the displays & leds and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

A handheld PCB spell tome for tabletop RPGs, the cringiest text adventures you'll ever play and mini games no one asked for. Built around a tiny OLED for minimal gaming and a Seeed Studio XIAO RP2040 for maximum reprogramming comfort.

A handheld fantasy-themed PCB spell tome designed for tabletop RPGs and other shenanigans.

The Spell Tome is a sandwiched, book-like PCB build consisting of a functional electronics PCB and a decorative top PCB. Originally it was designed as a magical artifact for a custom text adventure and small games.

Right now it's evolving into anything that can be done with a tiny OLED and 4 buttons (stay tuned!).

Spell tome bottom: common questions

What microcontroller does the Spell tome bottom use?

The Spell tome bottom is built around the XIAO-RP2040-DIP, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Spell tome bottom PCB?

The Spell tome bottom measures 69.9 × 100 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Spell tome bottom?

25 components, from 16 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Spell tome bottom design files?

From the bitshiftcrazy/spell_tome repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Spell tome bottom design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which bitshiftcrazy chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Spell tome bottom without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
