About the Thermabrick PCB

Thermabrick is an open source ESP32 PCB design by BoujeeEnjinia1701, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 110 × 80 mm, with 19 components from 18 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-DevKitC V4, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the R-78E5.0-1.0, MAX6675 module, T1 well wall, MAX6675 module, T3 sand center, MAX6675 module, T4 sand outer and MAX6675 module, T5 outlet air. By type, the board carries 7 ICs, 4 resistors, 3 connectors, 2 transistors, 2 capacitors and 1 diode.

It belongs with the power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Sand thermal battery in an insulated steel drum. Resistive elements charge it from surplus PV, and a fan pulls hot air out for space heating.

Change a circuit in its script, not in KiCad, then regenerate from the repo root:

Both scripts need KiCad 9 or later. They look for it in /Applications/KiCad, in ~/Applications/KiCad, or on the mounted KiCad disk image.

schematic.py runs KiCad's electrical rules check (ERC). It then exports the netlist and checks every net against the circuit the script declares. It fails on any ERC error or net mismatch.

Thermabrick: common questions

What microcontroller does the Thermabrick use?

The Thermabrick is built around the ESP32-DevKitC V4, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Thermabrick PCB?

The Thermabrick measures 110 × 80 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Thermabrick?

19 components, from 18 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Thermabrick design files?

From the BoujeeEnjinia1701/thermabrick repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Thermabrick design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which BoujeeEnjinia1701 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Thermabrick without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
