About the H.I.R.O-MDS-0027 PCB

H.I.R.O-MDS-0027 is an open source ESP32 PCB design by Broseph9972, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 80.1 × 107.1 mm, with 18 components from 13 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO-ESP32-S3-PLUS-SMD, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the PCM5102A and MAX98357A. By type, the board carries 6 capacitors, 4 connectors, 3 ICs, 3 switches, 1 speaker and 1 resistor.

It belongs with the audio and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

a real mp3 player based on the H.I.R.O from good kid music videos.

I unironically listened to almost exclusively good kid while making this project.

1. Solder Parts Onto the PCB. As there are many SMD Components and small capacitors, reflow soldering is recommended. Use long header pins for the screen DO NOT SOLDER THE SCREEN TO THE PCB YET. 2. If any Through Hole parts poke into the case, like the speaker, use pliers or something to take them off. there should be indents in the case for them though. 3. Place the PCB Onto the Main Casing. If it dosent fit, just sand the part until it does. 4. Screw In the screen to the 4 square brackets on the main casing…

H.I.R.O-MDS-0027: common questions

What microcontroller does the H.I.R.O-MDS-0027 use?

The H.I.R.O-MDS-0027 is built around the XIAO-ESP32-S3-PLUS-SMD, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the H.I.R.O-MDS-0027 PCB?

The H.I.R.O-MDS-0027 measures 80.1 × 107.1 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the H.I.R.O-MDS-0027?

18 components, from 13 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the H.I.R.O-MDS-0027 design files?

From the Broseph9972/H.I.R.O-MDS-0027 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the H.I.R.O-MDS-0027 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which Broseph9972 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the H.I.R.O-MDS-0027 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
