BSidesSF 2024 Electronic Badge

The 2024 BSidesSF Badge is designed for playing the Attribution Game. Similar to the board game Clue or some versions of Carmen Sandiego, you need to figure out who the threat actor, attack tool, and victim are for each round of the game. You do this by trading cards (or 'clues') as well as your self-entered alibi name with others at the conference.

In order to play in the Attribution Game, you will need to enter a name or handle when you first turn on your badge. This will stay through power cycles. It can be cleared in your settings which will force you to enter a new one.

Badge-2024: common questions

What microcontroller does the Badge-2024 use?

The Badge-2024 is built around the W25Q128JVS, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Badge-2024 PCB?

The Badge-2024 measures 66.7 × 85.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Badge-2024?

49 components, from 27 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Badge-2024 design files?

From the BSidesSF/badge-2024 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Badge-2024 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CC-BY-SA-4.0 license, which BSidesSF chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Badge-2024 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
