About the PhoneController PCB

PhoneController is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by bsidestlv, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 98.2 × 120.7 mm, with 58 components from 18 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the C2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the C6186 and C97521. By type, the board carries 21 resistors, 16 capacitors, 14 switches, 3 ICs, 1 crystal and 1 connector.

It belongs with the wearables designs in this gallery.

The project files inside badge/ are still named PhoneController. — that was the board's working name before it became the badge. The directory says what it is; renaming the KiCad project would break every path that refers to it.

KiCad 9. Nothing here needs a plugin to view; the production packages were generated with Fabrication Toolkit, whose settings live in each project's fabrication-toolkit-options.json.

PhoneController: common questions

What microcontroller does the PhoneController use?

The PhoneController is built around the C2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the PhoneController PCB?

The PhoneController measures 98.2 × 120.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the PhoneController?

58 components, from 18 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the PhoneController design files?

From the bsidestlv/bsidestlv-2026-badge repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the PhoneController design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which bsidestlv chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the PhoneController without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
