My RAT ('reverse avalanche transistor') drone synth

This repository describes my RAT (reverse avalanche transistor) drone synth. I generated the image of the bird using Stable Diffusion (AI).

This project was inspired by the work by Sam Battle of Look Mum No Computer. Sam released a video where he made a synthesiser from a Red Bull can - watch it here. In his related post 'Super simple oscillator' he described more of the electronics and a few example schematics. There was also a link to a more technical description of reverse avalanche mode on a blog BJT In Reverse Avalanche Mode by Kerry D. Wong. It was through both Sam's and Kerry's…

Drone ting: common questions

How big is the Drone ting PCB?

The Drone ting measures 170 × 90 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Drone ting?

99 components, from 98 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Drone ting design files?

From the cairanvanrooyen/rat_drone_synth repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Drone ting design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with cairanvanrooyen. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.
