Gesture recognition module using APDS9500

For gesture sensing we are using the APDS-9500 sensor from Broadcom. It is an imaging-based gesture recognition IC with an I2C-bus interface. It can recognise nine gestures, including move up, move down, move left, move right, move forward, move backwards, circle-clockwise, circle-counterclockwise and wave. An RP2040 ARM SoC from the Raspberry Pi Foundation is being used as the main controller. When it is plugged in the RP2040 will enumerate an HID device and whenever a gesture is detected it will send a corresponding pre-programmed response to the PC using HID protocol. The KiCad project lives in the Circuit-Digest/Gesture-recognition-APDS9500 repository on GitHub; these links point at the commit this page was built from.

Gesture recognition-APDS9500: common questions

What microcontroller does the Gesture recognition-APDS9500 use?

The Gesture recognition-APDS9500 is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Gesture recognition-APDS9500 PCB?

The Gesture recognition-APDS9500 measures 25.7 × 14.6 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Gesture recognition-APDS9500?

54 components, from 23 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Gesture recognition-APDS9500 design files?

From the Circuit-Digest/Gesture-recognition-APDS9500 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Gesture recognition-APDS9500 design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Circuit-Digest. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Gesture recognition-APDS9500 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
