From the project

Spatially-Distributed Temporally-Synchronised Infrasonic Recorder

Kleinvoet is a self-contained low-cost passive acoustic monitoring device. The recorder was initially designed for distributed infrasonic (8Hz) localisation, and features accurate temporal synchronisation through the use of an onboard GNSS module.

The recorder is capable of 24-bit stereo recording at a variable sampling rate of 8kHz to 192kHz. The recordings along with timestamp and operational log information is stored on a microSD card. The recordings are stored as a series of 256MiB WAV files.

Kleinvoet: common questions

What microcontroller does the Kleinvoet use?

The Kleinvoet is built around the STM32F446RCT6, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Kleinvoet PCB?

The Kleinvoet measures 60 × 66 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Kleinvoet?

167 components, from 72 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Kleinvoet design files?

From the CMGeldenhuys/kleinvoet repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Kleinvoet design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which CMGeldenhuys chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Kleinvoet without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
