About the OpenWest2018 PCB

OpenWest2018 is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by compukidmike, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 82.6 × 95.3 mm, with 6 components from 4 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the WeMos_mini, from the ESP8266 family. By type, the board carries 2 connectors, 2 LEDs, 1 IC and 1 battery holder.

It belongs with the iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

The 2018 badge features WiFi connectivity, and all the badges are controlled by an MQTT server. The main controller is a WeMos D1 Mini, which uses the ESP8266 WiFi module.

A note on battery life: WiFi uses a lot of power. So do LEDs. The badges probably won't last more than a day on batteries. Take them out when you're not at the conference to avoid unnecessary battery drain. Also, don't connect a USB cable while the batteries are in the badge. Bad things could happen.

OpenWest2018: common questions

What microcontroller does the OpenWest2018 use?

The OpenWest2018 is built around the WeMos_mini, from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the OpenWest2018 PCB?

The OpenWest2018 measures 82.6 × 95.3 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the OpenWest2018?

6 components, from 4 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the OpenWest2018 design files?

From the compukidmike/OpenWest2018 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the OpenWest2018 design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with compukidmike. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the OpenWest2018 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
