About the Virgil Motor PCB

Virgil Motor is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by da-penguin-guy, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 20 × 114 mm, with 19 components from 11 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the B103, DRV8220DSG, CAP1293-1-SN and W25Q16JVSS. By type, the board carries 10 capacitors, 5 ICs, 2 connectors, 1 crystal and 1 resistor.

It belongs with the audio and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

The Proteus is a modular collection of PCBs that will be used to develop the Virgil sound Protocol

Formerly known as the Virgil Controller, the Proteus is named after Proteus, a minor god from greek mythology. I chose this name because in Virgil's Georgics, he rapidly changes form, similar to how the Proteus is fully modular and can change quickly.

The Proteus doesn't fall into a good product class, primarily because this hasn't ever been done before. The best analog would be some midi controller, like the Behringer X-touch. However, this varies from that in several cases. Firstly, it will…

Virgil Motor: common questions

What microcontroller does the Virgil Motor use?

The Virgil Motor is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Virgil Motor PCB?

The Virgil Motor measures 20 × 114 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1 mm thick.

How many components are on the Virgil Motor?

19 components, from 11 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Virgil Motor design files?

From the da-penguin-guy/Proteus repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Virgil Motor design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with da-penguin-guy. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Virgil Motor without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
