About the Pico Interface One PCB

Pico Interface One is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by derekfountain, published on GitHub under the GPL-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 100 × 99.9 mm, with 32 components from 20 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Pico-1 ROM, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the 4075, 74LS245, Pico-2 IO, APS6404L-3SQR_PSRAM64Mbit and Pico-3 UI. By type, the board carries 11 resistors, 7 ICs, 4 connectors, 4 capacitors, 2 switches and 1 transistor.

It belongs with the test & measurement designs in this gallery.

A recreation of the ZX Spectrum Expansion System, a hardware Microdrive emulator

Update August'26: Following recent interest in this project I've been making a few interfaces up so people can buy them. The project page on my personal website has the details on how to get hold of one.

This device plugs into the back of a 48K ZX Spectrum and provides the functionality of the original 1984 "ZX Spectrum Expansion System". It emulates a ZX Interface One with 8 ZX Microdrives.

Pico Interface One: common questions

What microcontroller does the Pico Interface One use?

The Pico Interface One is built around the Pico-1 ROM, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Pico Interface One PCB?

The Pico Interface One measures 100 × 99.9 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 4.69 mm thick.

How many components are on the Pico Interface One?

32 components, from 20 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Pico Interface One design files?

From the derekfountain/zx-spectrum-pico-interface-one repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Pico Interface One design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-2.0 license, which derekfountain chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Pico Interface One without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
