About the WAZO PCB

WAZO is an open source ESP32 PCB design by DevMubarak1, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 60 × 60 mm, with 72 components from 36 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the BQ24250RGER, MAX20402AFLB/VY+T and MAX98357AETE+T. By type, the board carries 25 resistors, 22 capacitors, 4 ICs, 4 connectors, 4 diodes and 4 inductors.

It belongs with the audio, iot & wireless and power & battery designs in this gallery.

An Edge-AI Multilingual Voice Assistant for Indigenous Nigerian Languages & Dialects

Wazo (Yoruba for "wisdom") is a voice assistant built for Nigeria's 200+ million people who speak Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and Pidgin. Unlike Siri or Alexa, everything runs locally on a Raspberry Pi in your home - no internet required, no cloud servers, complete privacy.

Try asking Alexa something in Pidgin. Or with a Nigerian accent. Doesn't work, right?

Global tech companies train their voice assistants on American and British English. They don't understand our accents, can't speak our languages, and definitely don't get our cultural context. Plus they need constant internet (good luck with…

WAZO: common questions

What microcontroller does the WAZO use?

The WAZO is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the WAZO PCB?

The WAZO measures 60 × 60 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the WAZO?

72 components, from 36 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the WAZO design files?

From the DevMubarak1/WAZO repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the WAZO design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which DevMubarak1 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the WAZO without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
