About the Bonsai PCB

Bonsai is an open source ESP32 PCB design by devvazquez, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 41 × 23 mm, with 6 components from 6 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO-ESP32-S3-SMD, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the MAX98357AETE+T. By type, the board carries 2 ICs, 2 capacitors, 1 connector and 1 switch.

It belongs with the audio, iot & wireless and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Bonsai is a small, snap-on device that can be attached to almost any pair of glasses. Powered by a Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32S3 Sense, it captures images and video from the user's perspective and uses AI to analyze the surrounding environment.

The main repository containing all the files involved in the creation of this smart device, such as cad files, code, designs...

Releases are cut by hand: run the Build and publish firmware workflow from the Actions tab, give it a version like v1.0.0, and it builds the firmware, tags the commit and publishes the release the page reads (.github/workflows/release.yml). The page itself lives in docs/ and is described in docs/README.md.

Bonsai: common questions

What microcontroller does the Bonsai use?

The Bonsai is built around the XIAO-ESP32-S3-SMD, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Bonsai PCB?

The Bonsai measures 41 × 23 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Bonsai?

6 components, from 6 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Bonsai design files?

From the devvazquez/bonsai repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Bonsai design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which devvazquez chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Bonsai without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
