About the VGAtonic PCB

VGAtonic is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by dqydj, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 78.3 × 74.6 mm, with 56 components from 25 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATTINY2313A-S, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the LTC6903, XC95144PQ100, IS61LV5128AL and NCP1117ST33T3G. By type, the board carries 22 resistors, 15 capacitors, 12 connectors, 5 ICs, 1 fuse and 1 switch.

From the project

Entry level embedded video card in a neat little CPLD package.

NOTE: For most purposes, you should build REVISION B. Please exit this directory and go to Rev B. It is smaller, it doesn't require extra code to work around an error in the schematic, it supports more serial speeds, and it has better ground planes and shielding for SPI signals. It also has LEDs!

The only reason you should build this version is for easy access to RCA and the GPIOs. Revision B has all the same pins broken out on a .4mm pitch header, which is harder to access, but is superior in all other ways!8

VGAtonic: common questions

What microcontroller does the VGAtonic use?

The VGAtonic is built around the ATTINY2313A-S, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the VGAtonic PCB?

The VGAtonic measures 78.3 × 74.6 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the VGAtonic?

56 components, from 25 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the VGAtonic design files?

From the dqydj/VGAtonic repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the VGAtonic design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with dqydj. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the VGAtonic without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
