About the VGATonic RevB PCB

VGATonic RevB is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by dqydj, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 49.6 × 70.2 mm, with 50 components from 28 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATTINY4313, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the LTC6903, XC95144PQ100-100TQFP, IS61LV5128AL and NCP1117ST33T3G. By type, the board carries 17 capacitors, 16 resistors, 7 connectors, 5 ICs, 3 diodes and 1 crystal.

From the project

Entry level embedded video card in a neat little CPLD package.

NOTE: This is the current version that should be built. It has the NTSC pins and almost the same number of GPIOs broken out as Rev A on the optional unpopulated header on the back.

For VGA, there is no contest - build Rev B. You will get more serial speeds, better ground isolation, shielding on the SPI signals, and... LEDs!

By default, you should try the REGULAR firmware, not the WIDESCREEN firmware. 640x480 at 60Hz is industry standard, so that's the fallback (and it allows 320x240, 160x120 and 80x60 resolutions too for your slower parts or when you want to drive VGATonic over serial).…

VGATonic RevB: common questions

What microcontroller does the VGATonic RevB use?

The VGATonic RevB is built around the ATTINY4313, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the VGATonic RevB PCB?

The VGATonic RevB measures 49.6 × 70.2 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the VGATonic RevB?

50 components, from 28 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the VGATonic RevB design files?

From the dqydj/VGAtonic repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the VGATonic RevB design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with dqydj. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the VGATonic RevB without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
