About the LED matrix PCB
LED matrix is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by dstreby, published on GitHub. It is a board, with 97 components from 11 distinct parts.
Its main chip is the ATTINY261A-P, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the ULN2003A, MCP7940M and 74HC595. By type, the board carries 80 diodes, 5 ICs, 3 switches, 3 capacitors, 3 resistors and 1 crystal.
It belongs with the displays & leds designs in this gallery.
From the project
LED Matrix based clock
A simple clock with 16x5 LED Matrix display using SIPO shift registers to allow individual addressing of 80 LED's via 8 digital GPIO's. Timing provided via RTC with XTAL.
This is noting revolutionary, and it's certainly been done a million times before, but never by me. This is essentially a learning experience for me. I've decided on a 16x5 matrix size as it will be convenient to adopt into a digital clock using a 3x5 digits, plus ":" and spaces.

LED matrix: common questions
What microcontroller does the LED matrix use?
The LED matrix is built around the ATTINY261A-P, from the AVR/Arduino family.
How many components are on the LED matrix?
97 components, from 11 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the LED matrix design files?
From the dstreby/LED_matrix repository on GitHub, which has a netlist; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the LED matrix design in my own project?
The repository has no license, so all rights stay with dstreby. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.
Can I test firmware for the LED matrix without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
