Its main chip is the TEENSY4.1, from the NXP family. Other key parts include the 74HC595 and 74HCT245. By type, the board carries 66 diodes, 36 resistors, 32 switches, 4 ICs, 4 connectors and 4 capacitors.

It belongs with the keyboards and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

hardware-based step sequencer using the Teensy 4.1 microcontroller

This project implements a hardware-based step sequencer using the Teensy 4.1 microcontroller. It utilizes the Teensy's onboard USB Host capabilities to accept input from standard USB keyboards, alongside a custom 32-switch diode matrix for tactile control.

The application is designed as a standalone, embedded instrument. It functions as an 8-track step sequencer with support for 96 PPQN high-resolution timing, pattern chaining (Song Mode), per-track swing, real-time performance triggers, and visual feedback via an I2C OLED display with scrolling track views.

Teensy step sequencer: common questions

What microcontroller does the Teensy step sequencer use?

The Teensy step sequencer is built around the TEENSY4.1, from the NXP family.

How big is the Teensy step sequencer PCB?

The Teensy step sequencer measures 340 × 100 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Teensy step sequencer?

151 components, from 20 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Teensy step sequencer design files?

From the dwmorrin/teensy-step-sequencer repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Teensy step sequencer design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with dwmorrin. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Teensy step sequencer without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug NXP firmware against it before you order a PCB.
