About the Helix PCB

Helix is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by Firestorm108, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 75 × 75 mm, with 59 components from 25 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the W25Q16JVZPIQ TR, TMC2209 and NCP1117-1.5_SOT223. By type, the board carries 23 capacitors, 15 resistors, 6 connectors, 5 ICs, 4 modules and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the robotics & motion designs in this gallery.

From the project

A coil winder for tesla coils, flyback transformers, electromagnets, and more! Aims to remove the large time barrier in winding your own coils.

An automatic coil winding machine for high voltage transformers, electromagnetics, motors, etc. The combination of the leadscrew controlled spool holder and aligning/tensioning system with the precise TMC2209 controlled stepper spinner ensures even winding across every layer. The device aims to reduce long hours spent hand winding crappy transformers so that prototyping is quick and efficient. The all-in-one control board has integrated stepper drivers and hooks up to the LCD/rotary encoder based control panel. It is easily reprogrammable with USB-C. With a small <75mmx75mm footprint, it fits…

Helix: common questions

What microcontroller does the Helix use?

The Helix is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Helix PCB?

The Helix measures 75 × 75 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Helix?

59 components, from 25 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Helix design files?

From the Firestorm108/Helix repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Helix design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Firestorm108. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Helix without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
