About the 6502-CRAB-APPLE PCB

6502-CRAB-APPLE is an open source PIC PCB design by gcswales, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 69.9 × 74.3 mm, with 19 components from 10 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the PIC18F15Q41-IP, from the PIC family. Other key parts include the 7400, W65C02S and 71256SA. By type, the board carries 5 ICs, 5 capacitors, 5 resistors, 2 connectors, 1 switch and 1 diode.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

6502 Minimal Single Board Computer: CRAB APPLE

This project was initially intended as a personal project but due to the level of interest I have decided to publish the documentation.

The Crab Apple is a very simple and minimalist computer, as such is ideal for the first-time builder wanting to build their own retro-computer.

Just to clarify; the system will run most software for the Apple I computer but, due to the minimalist nature of the design, it is NOT hardware compatible with the Apple I.

6502-CRAB-APPLE: common questions

What microcontroller does the 6502-CRAB-APPLE use?

The 6502-CRAB-APPLE is built around the PIC18F15Q41-IP, from the PIC family.

How big is the 6502-CRAB-APPLE PCB?

The 6502-CRAB-APPLE measures 69.9 × 74.3 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the 6502-CRAB-APPLE?

19 components, from 10 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the 6502-CRAB-APPLE design files?

From the gcswales/6502-CRAB-APPLE repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the 6502-CRAB-APPLE design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which gcswales chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the 6502-CRAB-APPLE without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug PIC firmware against it before you order a PCB.
