About the CrushedICE PCB

CrushedICE is an open source Microchip SAM PCB design by gregdavill, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 100 × 50 mm, with 68 components from 43 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATSAMD51G19A, from the Microchip SAM family. Other key parts include the TLV70725PDQNT, SN74LVC1T45DRLR, S27KS0641DPBHI020, AT25SF081-MAHD-T and TLV71718PDQNR. By type, the board carries 31 capacitors, 13 resistors, 8 ICs, 7 connectors, 6 diodes and 1 crystal.

Simple but Small Frame Grabber

Project Stage: VERY Early Development !!! Note this design has an incorrect HyperRam footprint !!!

(Initially a project called: CrushedICE)

A FPGA based camera interface board. This PCB was developed before the bosonFrameGrabber, and has a vastly different architecture. It uses an ICE5LP4K, HyperRAM and a QSPI bridge to a SAMD51.

FPGA+RAM will act as a FIFO, connect to SAMD51 via QSPI. To read out a frame when required. SAMD51 has a SDMMC module so it handles the writing to an SD card.

CrushedICE: common questions

What microcontroller does the CrushedICE use?

The CrushedICE is built around the ATSAMD51G19A, from the Microchip SAM family.

How big is the CrushedICE PCB?

The CrushedICE measures 100 × 50 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the CrushedICE?

68 components, from 43 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the CrushedICE design files?

From the gregdavill/boson-sd-hardware repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the CrushedICE design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which gregdavill chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the CrushedICE without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
