About the Custom keyboard PCB

Custom keyboard is an open source ESP32 PCB design by GuySabban, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 335.4 × 118.1 mm, with 169 components from 11 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-DevKitC, from the ESP32 family. By type, the board carries 84 switches, 83 diodes, 1 IC and 1 connector.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

I made this project as a continuation for the hackpad, and I really wanted to know how building a real keyboard is, not just a macropad. This helped me finally understand how keyboards really work!

Custom keyboard: common questions

What microcontroller does the Custom keyboard use?

The Custom keyboard is built around the ESP32-S3-DevKitC, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Custom keyboard PCB?

The Custom keyboard measures 335.4 × 118.1 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Custom keyboard?

169 components, from 11 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Custom keyboard design files?

From the GuySabban/custom-keyboard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Custom keyboard design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with GuySabban. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Custom keyboard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
