About the Pontag PCB

Pontag is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by hkzlab, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 38.1 × 85.1 mm, with 35 components from 25 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATmega328P-PU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the L78L05_TO92 and MAX232. By type, the board carries 11 capacitors, 7 connectors, 5 diodes, 5 resistors, 3 ICs and 2 jumpers.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

PONTAG is an active adapter that converts a mouse using PS/2 protocol into an RS232 mouse (Microsoft protocol), commonly used on IBM XT/AT and compatibles.

Left mouse button pressed: Switches between simple Microsoft protocol and Microsoft protocol with wheel (DEFAULT: MS+Wheel) Right mouse button pressed: Switches mouse resolution, switching between 1, 2, 4 or 8 counts per mm traveled (DEFAULT: 4 counts per mm) Both buttons pressed**: Resets the board to defaults

Pin 1: The board will enter debug mode, and start printing debug strings on the serial port. It will NOT work as a mouse. Pin 2: If jumpered, the board enter power save mode after 3 minutes of mouse inactivity. Pin 3: If shorted, forces the use of the simple Microsoft protocol (2…

Pontag: common questions

What microcontroller does the Pontag use?

The Pontag is built around the ATmega328P-PU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Pontag PCB?

The Pontag measures 38.1 × 85.1 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Pontag?

35 components, from 25 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Pontag design files?

From the hkzlab/pontag repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Pontag design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which hkzlab chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Pontag without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
