About the Tuffboy PCB

Tuffboy is an open source ESP32 PCB design by ishantdahiya1501-ctrl, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 52.5 × 90.5 mm, with 7 components from 7 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-C5-DevKitC-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the NRF24L01_Breakout, CC1101-868MHz-Module and TFT_320x240. By type, the board carries 6 ICs and 1 connector.

It belongs with the rf & radio and iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

better then flipper zero.

A handheld multi-tool inspired by the Flipper Zero, but built around the ESP32-C5 Devkit C with Dual Band (2.4GHz + 5Ghz), and a big idea: an expansion port that lets you bolt on a whole second microcontroller (Black Pill, or basically any 3.3V dev board).

This is the part that makes TuffBoy ~200× more flexible than a Flipper — instead of being stuck with only 2.4 GHz WiFi we have a breakthrough with the support of 5GHz, opening the door to WiFi security testing, along with support for plugging in whatever co-processor the task needs.

Tuffboy: common questions

What microcontroller does the Tuffboy use?

The Tuffboy is built around the ESP32-C5-DevKitC-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Tuffboy PCB?

The Tuffboy measures 52.5 × 90.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Tuffboy?

7 components, from 7 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Tuffboy design files?

From the ishantdahiya1501-ctrl/tuffboy repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Tuffboy design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with ishantdahiya1501-ctrl. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Tuffboy without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
