About the Enlightened-Otter PCB

Enlightened-Otter is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by Jana-Marie, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 100 × 100 mm, with 171 components from 50 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP8266EX, from the ESP8266 family. Other key parts include the RT9466, MIC4416, STM32F334, MIC5501-3.0V and BY25Q64ASSIG. By type, the board carries 59 capacitors, 58 resistors, 10 diodes, 9 ICs, 9 LEDs and 5 inductors.

It belongs with the power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Enlighted-Otter is an Open-Source and OSHW work-light for hacker/maker events like the chaos communication congress, which can be screwed onto a club mate bottle.

Everything can be assembled as per manufacturer except for the following parts.

- LED1,LED2,LED3 are per BOM sidemounted LEDs but they have to be rotated by 90 degrees and treated as reverse mount leds. - The studs cannot stand by themselfes, thus they have to be supported while reflowing - D7,D8 are normal 0805 LEDs but also reverse mounted

- After reflowing the batteries can be inserted, EO should boot up and the middle led should light up. EO can now be flashed via Tag-connect - before adding the LED pcb it is mandatory to turn off EO! - Insulating washers (TO220 isolators) have to be…

Enlightened-Otter: common questions

What microcontroller does the Enlightened-Otter use?

The Enlightened-Otter is built around the ESP8266EX, from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the Enlightened-Otter PCB?

The Enlightened-Otter measures 100 × 100 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Enlightened-Otter?

171 components, from 50 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Enlightened-Otter design files?

From the Jana-Marie/Enlightened-Otter repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Enlightened-Otter design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which Jana-Marie chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Enlightened-Otter without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
