About the TimeCapsule PCB

TimeCapsule is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by jaxfry, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 50 × 70 mm, with 51 components from 29 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the SC0914(13), from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the TPL5110QDDCRQ1, AP2112K-3.3TRG1, RV-3028-C7 32.768KHZ 1PPM-TA-QC, W25Q128JVSIQ TR and SN74LVC1G32DBVR. By type, the board carries 18 capacitors, 16 resistors, 6 ICs, 4 transistors, 2 switches and 2 diodes.

A usb time capsule!

Time Capsule USB is a custom PCB using the RP2040 microcontroller that functions as a sort of time capsule. It alows you upload files to it, which can only be accessed after a certain date that you set. Due to the limits of battery life, it's not meant to be used for long-term storage, but it should last about 7 years and then about 1 year of the LED blinking to indicate that the time has come to access the files. The main limit is that CR2032 batteries only last about 10 years and naturally discharge over time.

TimeCapsule: common questions

What microcontroller does the TimeCapsule use?

The TimeCapsule is built around the SC0914(13), from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the TimeCapsule PCB?

The TimeCapsule measures 50 × 70 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the TimeCapsule?

51 components, from 29 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the TimeCapsule design files?

From the jaxfry/TimeCapsule repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the TimeCapsule design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with jaxfry. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the TimeCapsule without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
