About the Pixelrings PCB

Pixelrings is an open source Microchip SAM PCB design by jfedor2, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 30 × 30 mm, with 18 components from 5 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATSAMD21E18A-M, from the Microchip SAM family. By type, the board carries 12 diodes, 3 switches, 2 capacitors and 1 IC.

LED earrings programmable in Python

This repository contains designs and instructions to make LED earrings that are programmable in Python.

Each earring is a PCB with a SAMD21 chip and 12 individually addressable RGB LEDs. The diameter of the earring is 30mm and the weight is around 6 grams. To charge the batteries and program the earrings there's a dock that connects to your computer over USB.

Pixelrings: common questions

What microcontroller does the Pixelrings use?

The Pixelrings is built around the ATSAMD21E18A-M, from the Microchip SAM family.

How big is the Pixelrings PCB?

The Pixelrings measures 30 × 30 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Pixelrings?

18 components, from 5 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Pixelrings design files?

From the jfedor2/pixelrings repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Pixelrings design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with jfedor2. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Pixelrings without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
