About the Labs PCB

Labs is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by markentier, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 30 × 24.9 mm, with 19 components from 15 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP-01 (8266 or 8285), from the ESP8266 family. Other key parts include the MIC5219-5.0YM5 and MIC5219-3.3YM5. By type, the board carries 7 resistors, 4 capacitors, 3 ICs, 2 connectors, 1 transistor and 1 switch.

It belongs with the displays & leds and iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

An ESP8285 (or ESP8266) which sends a Slack message into a channel once a big button is pressed.

Show status of progress with a 24 pixel WS2812B LED ring (also known as Neopixel).

After job is done, the ESP will be turned off (so it needs an LDO with ENABLE/SHUTDOWN pin).

It's basically an overcomplicated "dash button" with fancy lights in a button and housed in a very huge case. Funnily enough I shrunk the PCB way more than needed for the case, but I liked this challenge and wanted to get familiar with SMD soldering anyway.

Labs: common questions

What microcontroller does the Labs use?

The Labs is built around the ESP-01 (8266 or 8285), from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the Labs PCB?

The Labs measures 30 × 24.9 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Labs?

19 components, from 15 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Labs design files?

From the markentier/labs repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Labs design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with markentier. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Labs without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
